What Does Death Mean in the Dali Tarot?
Death almost never speaks of dying. It is the card of necessary endings: something finishes so that something else can begin. In the Dali Tarot it is one of the calmest images in the deck, and its message is transformation, not threat.
What Death Looks Like in Dalí’s Deck
In place of the skeleton with a scythe found in other decks, the center of the card is a dark cypress, cut off and hanging above the ground, with a skull set into its trunk. Beside it a red rose is in bloom, and a swallow crosses the sky. The landscape is flat, open and full of light.
The card carries the number XIII, the Hebrew letter Mem (מ) and the symbol of Saturn, the planet of time. The cypress is the tree of Mediterranean cemeteries; the rose and the swallow, by contrast, are signs of new life. The whole image says what the card says: an ending that already contains its beginning.

Death Upright
Upright, Death marks a definite close: a stage, a job, a relationship or a way of being that has run its course. Letting go hurts, but the card insists it is necessary. What ends leaves room, and that room is the good news.
Death Reversed
Reversed, the ending is postponed. You hold on to something that is already over, out of fear or habit, and the situation is left half done. It can also indicate a slow transformation that happens inside before it shows outside. Ask yourself what you are holding up that no longer holds you up.
Death in Love
In love it speaks of the end of a phase: sometimes a breakup, far more often a relationship that sheds its skin and is reborn in a different form. Reversed, it warns of prolonging something that has no life left in it.

At work it announces endings: a post, a project, a way of working. It is usually the step before something that suits you better. With money, it asks you to cut expenses and habits that no longer make sense.
Death in a Three-Card Reading
- Past or background: something ended for good and made you start again in a different way.
- Present or central energy: you are closing a cycle. Let go without a fight: you cannot take everything with you into the next stage.
- Near future or guidance: a necessary ending is approaching. After it will come a beginning you cannot picture today.
